Over winter I spent some time in California, which was a welcome change from the weather back home. It was a good chance to train consistently without losing half your week to wind, rain and cold hands. I also got a decent mix of surfing in alongside training, which kept things balanced and made the whole block feel more sustainable.
My main focus through the winter has been the swim and the run. In the pool the goal has been simple: more consistent work and becoming more efficient. A lot of the progress has come from doing the basics properly and staying as consistent as possible.
On the run side it has been about durability first. I have tried to build volume, focusing on improving my aerobic system to then later get more benefit from intensity leading up to the start of the season.. The aim has been to come out of winter feeling stronger and more aerobically developed.
When I got home I did two rounds of testing, which was a useful checkpoint. The results were interesting, not just because they showed improvement, but because they highlighted where the gains are coming from and what still needs attention.
Now I am gradually building intensity as the start of the season gets closer. The base work is largely done. The next phase is about adding more race-relevant efforts while keeping the consistency that has been the main driver of progress so far.
