May Update

Date: May 31st, 2026

May was a busy month of racing for me.  It kicked off strong with a personal best at the Scottish 5km Championships in Silverknowes. The perfect night for a fast run with no wind and a comfortable temperature.  I focused on pacing myself and gradually worked through the pack.  My fairly even pace saw me cross the line in 14:52. A nice reward for the work I have been putting in, in training.

After the 5k, I headed south to England for the BUCS Sprint Distance Triathlon Championships.  The race was only two days after the 5k and I struggled a bit on the run. However, it was a fun weekend away.

With BUCS behind me, my focus shifted to the second round of the British Triathlon Super Series in Llanelli, Wales. The competition was fierce as we were racing against seniors and it was also the European Championship qualifying race for them. The race start was delayed due to nearby lightning and heavy rain but once the weather cleared, conditions remained calm.

I started the race with a mediocre swim and came out in the second pack. During the bike, I sat in and didn’t put in much effort, just trying to stay out of the wind and fresh for the run. After the bike, I had one of my best runs in a triathlon to date , splitting 15:48 for the 5k. Ultimately, I finished 22nd overall and 5th  junior.

Post-Llanelli, I had some time to rest and build up my training before my trip to France for the D2 French GP race in Metz.

Arriving in France, I was greeted by a scorching 35°C on my first day. I went for an easy run but my heart rate skyrocketed. The following days involved a nine-hour drive from Bordeaux to Metz, in the sweltering heat.

The race conditions mirrored the days before; it was roasting. My Scottish body struggled to cope. I started strong with one of my best swim performances, coming out the water 25th and joining the front pack. The bike course was challenging and technical, causing the group to stretch and then regroup. Exhausted after the bike, I was already hot and sore as I entered transition. I began the run and immediately felt my legs struggling. Unfortunately, things only worsened as I overheated and ran to a disappointing 50th place after a strong start.

That evening, I returned to Bordeaux, where I’m preparing for my next race in a week’s time – the French junior triathlon championships.
